Comparative theoretical study of the Ag–MgO (100) and (110) interfaces

1999

We have calculated the atomic and electronic structures of Ag–MgO(100) and (110) interfaces using a periodic (slab) model and an ab initio Hartree–Fock approach with a posteriori electron correlation corrections. The electronic structure information includes interatomic bond populations, effective charges, and multipole moments of ions. This information is analyzed in conjunction with the interface binding energy and the equilibrium distances for both interfaces for various coverages. There are significant differences between partly covered surfaces and surfaces with several layers of metal, and these can be understood in terms of electrostatics and the electron density changes. For complet…

Melting temperature prediction by thermoelastic instability: An ab initio modelling, for periclase (MgO)

2021

Abstract Melting temperature (TM) is a crucial physical property of solids and plays an important role for the characterization of materials, allowing us to understand their behavior at non-ambient conditions. The present investigation aims i) to provide a physically sound basis to the estimation of TM through a “critical temperature” (TC), which signals the onset of thermodynamic instability due to a change of the isothermal bulk modulus from positive to negative at a given PC-VC-TC point, such that (∂P/∂V)VC,TC = -(∂2F/∂V2) VC,TC = 0; ii) to discuss the case of periclase (MgO), for which accurate melting temperature observations as a function of pressure are available. Using first princip…

Tuning the electronic and magnetic properties of 2D g-GaN by H adsorption: An ab-initio study

2019

Abstract We have theoretically studied the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the hydrogen adsorption on a honeycomb gallium-nitride two-dimensional monolayer (2D g-GaN). Results indicate that the band gap energy can be systematically tuned by the hydrogen coverage on the 2D g-GaN in the diluted limit. In addition, a total magnetic moment can be induced in the 2D g-GaN by hydrogen adsorption due to s-p interaction and band structure effects. Although hydrogen adsorption on top of nitrogen atoms shows the most stable energy in the 2D g-GaN, the most stable ferromagnetism -with a nonzero magnetic moment-is obtained when hydrogen is adsorbed on top of Ga atoms. These results ind…

Interaction of carbon with microstructural defects in a W-Re matrix: An ab initio assessment

2019

The interaction of carbon atoms with point defects and the core of edge and screw dislocations with Burgers vector a 0 / 2 ⟨ 111 ⟩ in W and a W-Re matrix is studied by means of ab initio calculations. The structure and energetics of the ground-state atomic configurations are presented and rationalized. It is found that di-vacancies, which are thermally unstable in pure W according to the state-of-the-art ab initio calculations, can nucleate at C and Re-C complexes, which fill the gap in the explanation of the emergence of nanovoids observed experimentally under irradiation. Also, on the basis of the recent experimental evidence and our calculations, the temperature ranges for the manifestat…

High pressure theoretical and experimental analysis of the bandgap of BaMoO4, PbMoO4, and CdMoO4

2019

We have investigated the origin of the bandgap of BaMoO4, PbMoO4, and CdMoO4 crystals on the basis of optical absorption spectroscopy experiments and ab initio electronic band structure, density of states, and electronic localization function calculations under high pressure. Our study provides an accurate determination of the bandgaps Eg and their pressure derivatives d E g / dP for BaMoO4 (4.43 eV, −4.4 meV/GPa), PbMoO4 (3.45 eV, −53.8 meV/GPa), and CdMoO4 (3.71 eV, −3.3 meV/GPa). The absorption edges were fitted with the Urbach exponential model which we demonstrate to be the most appropriate for thick crystals with direct bandgaps. So far, the narrowing of the bandgap of distinct PbMoO4…

Ab initio calculations of the electronic structure for Mn2+-doped YAlO3 crystals

2020

The electronic structure of Mn2+ ion substituted for the host Y atom in orthorhombic bulk YAlO3 crystals has been calculated by means of hybrid exchange-correlation functional HSE within density functional theory. The supercell approach has been used to simulate in Pbnm YAlO3 crystal the point defects, Mn-dopant and compensated the F+ center (oxygen vacancy with one trapped electron), to make unit cell neutral. Large 2 × 2 × 2 supercells of 160 atoms allow us to simulate substitutional point defect with concentration of about 3%. Mn2+ ions substituting for host Y form covalent Mn–O bonds, in opposite to the mostly ionic Y–O bond. The F center inserted to compensate the Mn2+ dopant in YAlO3 …

Ab initio calculations of structural, electronic and vibrational properties of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 perovskite crystals with oxygen vacancies

2020

The first-principles (ab initio) computations of the structural, electronic, and phonon properties have been performed for cubic and low-temperature tetragonal phases of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 perovskite crystals, both stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric (with neutral oxygen vacancies). Calculations were performed with the CRYSTAL17 computer code within the linear combination of atomic orbitals approximation, using the B1WC advanced hybrid exchange-correlation functional of the density-functional-theory (DFT) and the periodic supercell approach. Various possible spin states of the defective systems were considered by means of unrestricted (open shell) DFT calculations. It was demonstrated that…
